When it comes to renovations/retrofits, especially on older homes, a common obstacle that we often come across are windows that are right against the soffit. With no space to work with, adding an exterior crown moulding is something that requires a thoughtful design process. Here are our recommendations.
OPTION 1 - RUN THE CROWN TO THE EDGE OF THE OPENING
The key to making this work is using a crown that has a shallow depth at the top but enough at the bottom to extend past the vertical trim.
OPTION 2 - RUN THE CROWN TO THE EDGE OF THE OPENING WITH A RETURN AND OVERTOP A FLAT MOULDING
Save the best for last? Not here. This is a nicest and most aesthetic solution but it is the more expensive of the three options since it requires an extra piece and more time to execute. But fear not too much, a flat moulding is the least expensive of any of our profiles and the extra time is nominal.
OPTION 3 - SILL ONLY
If plain Jane is what's on the menu, this is the tastiest dish. While you won't have crown moulding on your home, consider this option to be the friendliest to your pockets.
